A Look Inside: Pinterest Board Inspiration
Oh, Pinterest is a dangerous tool for writers. We can get completely lost going through photos creating mood boards and looking for inspiration. Still, this is a wonderful tool for writers.
I’ve definitely been known to waste some time on this site, though not as much during the middle of writing series. This process usually kickstarts my writing mood as I look for ideas, themes, and general character aesthetics. Having some foundation before I go write makes for a smoother process, especially when it comes to character and setting descriptions.
I thought I’d share a few of my Pinterest boards that give me some excitement, especially going back and adding as the series progresses.
Star Collapsed // Star Supernova
Kiya - This character board is a mixture of badass and blue fire. Some of my pins were meant to give me an idea of her mood/fashion style while the rest shows her explosive powers at work. Yes, there is definitely a lot of The Magicians and WandaVision vibes (the Scarlet Witch is my favorite superhero), but they give me all the feels! It’s the perfect blend for our Blue Star.
Isobel - I knew Isobel’s powers going in to this series were going to be very specific. I knew exactly what I wanted to model her style after. So, we’ve got a bit of The Gifted and some light manipulation and portals!
Ryder - This board was one of the hardest because you don’t often see male models edited the way I wanted. However, it was pretty easy to pull his inspiration from space (his power is astronomical manipulation). It also helps that he’s the romantic interest and male lead, so his got a little more lovey-dovey than the others.
Soul Forgotten // Soul Remembered // Soul Obscured
Finnley - This is one of the first boards I created back in the day of writing this trilogy. Mostly, I needed some purple hair inspiration, but her vibe definitely comes out in this board! Especially in the later books, when I was adapting to writing a series and character growth, Finnley takes on a new life and really jumps off the page.
Nate - Maybe I just struggle with making boards for my male characters, but this one was a different kind of challenge. Nate’s power is shadow manipulation (umbrakinesis) which is often depicted in a way that didn’t fit Nate’s personality. So, his board is less about his power and more about his soul.
The Curse of Broken Shadows
While this ended up being a Brela-based board, there is a lot of book vibes in here! We’ve got some shadow wolf, some assassin, some romance, some stabby women (including a few that gave me Farrah vibes).
Warrior Series
Probably some of my favorite character-related boards. Kahyr’s was so much fun to make because I broke the Pinterest algorithm and basically got shown only green hair for two months straight. The other two men were obviously Narnia inspired and those outfits were so fun to find and incorporate in the books!
