Star Collapsed: Playlist

The playlist for Star Collapsed is finally yours!

For those unfamiliar with my debut Soul Series, it’s a tradition to have an accompanying playlist for these books. While Star Collapsed doesn’t explicitly mention the songs like the Soul Series does, there’s still a playlist that goes along with the book!

Whether you’re looking for new music or want to follow along with the emotions of the book, keep reading! There are songs that relate to specific chapters and you can read about each of those songs and how they relate to the scene or what made me choose that song specifically (no spoilers are given, I promise).

Introduction — filling a void - interlude by lovelytheband

We’ve got a bit of an introduction here with Kiya, good for those of you who haven’t read the Soul Series. You can get an understanding of how the previous events shaped the world they live in now, but you can also get an understanding of what Kiya is experiencing before the incredibly important events of the prologue.

Prologue — Get a Load of This One by Royal Teeth

You want an epic song for an epic fight. This song is specifically picked to show Kiya’s… cockiness. She’s a badass and knows it.

Chapter 1 — You’re Gonna Go Far Kid by The Offspring

Ryder isn’t quite the underdog, but he’s got some trouble seeing his strengths. We’re meeting him under Friday night lights facing down their rival school. It’s very telling for his story arc during this book.

Chapter 2 — Misery by blink-182

We’re meeting Kiya three years later. So while her first song was epic for this badass, we see a new side of what has happened to her fiery personality during that gap.

Chapter 3 — Whiskey by Young Rising Sons

Enemies at first sight, and Ryder can’t for the life of him figure it out. I loved having this song before I give you Kiya’s theme song, because Ryder has no idea what is happening and he just can’t seem to shake her.

Chapter 4 — Last Laugh by FLETCHER

A rival to Kiya’s theme song, but not yet. This song is a perfect follow up to Whiskey by Young Rising Sons because of this line: “Every whiskey that you’re drinkin’, You’ll be thinkin’ how I burn like that”.

Chapter 5 — Van Horn by Saint Motel

Kiya’s theme song! “So tell me do you hate me, or do you want to date me? It’s kinda hard to tell cause your eyes are lookin’ crazy”. Oh, boy. Ryder is in for it.

Chapter 6 — stupid mistakes by lovelytheband

This is such an important scene for Kiya. She’s in the same boat as Ryder, in that she can’t understand what she’s feeling, but her post-fight reactions are drastically different. “My brain holds too many poisons, They help me make the wrong choices”.

Chapter 7 — Man Killer by Hedley

While this chapter is from Ryder’s perspective, this song belongs to Isobel. I just imagine this song playing on repeat in Isobel’s head while she’s talking about Kiya.

Chapter 8 — Mind is a Prison by Alec Benjamin

A very revealing song for Kiya’s inner monologue. We start to see the toll that those three years took on our main character.

Chapter 9 — The Enemy by Andrew Belle

Talk about an apology gone wrong. While this is mellow for the scene, Andrew Belle’s song The Enemy really captures the emotional turmoil of this chapter as Ryder and Kiya try to figure out what is going on between them.

Chapter 10 — Feel by FLETCHER

Oh, if Isobel had an album that summed up the first half of the book for her, it would be this one. It’s hard to get over your first love.

Chapter 11 — Don’t Know Your Name by Mating Ritual

I liked this song for Ryder’s chapter where he tries to get a little more info on Kiya. While he’s got his “anti-crush” going (thank you Josh for that perfect description), he’s also got this slight hint of emotion stirring in his chest.

Chapter 12 — can i call you back? by SHY Martin

Another perfect song to describe the inner workings of Kiya’s mind. She’s at a crossroads in her life, and with so much going on in her head and life, it’s interesting to see her trying to maintain her composure.

Chapter 13 — Give Me Something by The Man Who

I’ll just leave these lyrics here: “I want that total destruction, I want that takeover function.”

Chapter 14 — Tell Me You Don’t Love Me by Mating Ritual

I think it’s impossible for one of my books to not be influenced by Mating Ritual. Tell Me You Don’t Love Me is one of those songs you listen to right after a breakup when you still have all those good feelings even though you know that the relationship isn’t right. It’s the struggle of trying desperately to sever those ties.

Chapter 17 — Bad Love by brother sundance && Slow Heart by Twin XL

Two songs for this epic chapter! Bad Love is quite telling for this snappy duo.

Slow Heart is quite literally the only song that can possibly capture the feeling of the last half of this chapter. It’s the push and pull of two people who are trying to figure out where they stand in each others lives. Ryder and Kiya see a dramatic shift in their story here, and Twin XL delivered that emotional hit with this song.

Chapter 18 — Dirty Laundry by All Time Low

OH, the emotions. Dirty Laundry is one of my favorite songs by All Time Low and I’ve been dying for the perfect scene to use this. Ryder and Kiya have their histories, and being emotionally raw is hard. We’re seeing the emotional aftermath of the previous chapter.

Chapter 20 — Bad Guy by The Interrupters

For all of you who were waiting for your favorite Soul Series characters to have a chapter to shine, this one is it. Nate, Finnley, Glitch, and Marcus get to stretch their legs.

Chapter 26 — The Storm by Dylan Fraser

Whoa. Big things just happened. There is no better song for Kiya’s chapter than The Storm. Our badass is back.

Chapter 27 — time-bomb by All Time Low

“It was like a time-bomb set into motion, We knew that we were destined to explode", And if I have to pull you out of the wreckage, You know I’m never gonna let you go”.

Chapter 30 — Harlem by New Politics

I think I love having songs that fit action scenes. Harlem by New Politics was my walk out song my senior year (well, so was The Imperial March), and this one captures the insanity that is Kiya.

Chapter 31 — Down in Flames by Ella Vos && I Know How To Speak by Manchester Orchestra

Sadly, it can’t be epic songs and fight scenes all the time. This chapter gets Ella Vos for the first half and Manchester Orchestra for the events of the second half. This is a very critical chapter that pushes our two characters toward the final stages of the book.

Chapter 32 — Girl Crush by New Politics

I’m sorry. It’s just too funny.

Chapter 33 — Favorite Place (feat. The Band CAMINO) by All Time Low

Sprinkled throughout this book are interactions with each of our Soul Series main characters. We get to see how those characters have changed since the events of their last book. As Kiya handles the changes happening in the story, we get a wonderful conversation with Mads and Glitch to tame those spiraling emotions.

Chapter 34 — Please by Noah Kahan

Ryder’s been through a lot, and Please by Noah Kahan perfectly captures that beautiful heart of his.

Chapter 41 — Lone Digger by Caravan Palace

My dream scene for this song is two gorgeous women dancing in the middle of a fancy palace ball while the bad guys come at them. They are twirling and spinning and kicking ass all while the band continues to play in the background with this song going.
If you’ve ever seen the first episode of Chuck, I imagine something like this dance scene but with both characters doing the ass-kicking.

Chapter 45 — Fire by Barns Courtney && (bonus) What Are You Waiting For by Apollo LTD

Kiya is on a mission now. We wrap up this book with a promise. These two songs (one not available on Spotify) are perfect to wrap up the story and prepare us for the next book coming late this year!
